Helen Keller - Little Known Facts

Published on Sun, Jan 7th 2024 Education Rectangular HD

Some little known facts about Helen Keller, the famous Deaf-Blind writer and social activist. Fact #1. Helen Keller had two artificial glass eyes. Most early photographs of Helen show her face in profile (side view). Because Helen's left eye was deformed. In 1910, at age 30 both of Helen's eyes were removed, and replaced with glass eyes. Fact #2. In 1916 Helen was engaged to be married. While Helen's teacher, Anne Sullivan was away on vacation, Helen became engaged to her personal secretary, Peter Fagan. The local newspaper discovered the application for the marriage license and published the story! When Anne Sullivan and Helen's family were informed, they were furious. Peter was fired and Helen was sent to visit her sister in Alabama. Helen's brother-in-law threatened to shoot Peter. Helen and Peter secretly exchanged letters, and made plans to run away and get married. Helen quietly escaped from the house and waited for Peter to meet her. But Peter never arrived. Helen was heartbroken. Later, Helen believed that perhaps it was for the best. But she always recalled that "His love was a bright sun that shone upon my helplessness and isolation." She always referred to this time of love as her " Little island of joy, in a sea of darkness." Fact #3. In 1919 Helen starred in a silent film about her life, titled "Deliverance". The film documented Helen's life from childhood to maturity. "Blind, deaf and dumb!" "Helen, my baby!" The film showed Helen dancing, riding horses, flying, "listening" to music, etc. "It is wonderful! as if the chains that bind us to earth snapped, and set us free!" Helen's brother, Phillips Brooks Keller, and her mother, Kate Keller appeared in the film. Mrs. Kate Keller, "Mother, the sweetest word in all languages." Helen's teacher, Anne Sullivan and her companion and assistant, Polly Thomson also appeared in the film. The movie ended with a climatic scene. The End. The background music was "Lascia ch'io pianga" by George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759)
