This video presents the Top 200 songs of the year 1986, ranked by peak, not points. Please note that to be eligible for this chart, the song did not necessarily have to be released or charting in 1986, but reach its peak position that year. For instance, "Walk Like An Egyptian" by Bangles spent two weeks at #1 in 1987, but its peak date was in late 1986, so it is included only in this year's countdown.

Ties between songs were broken by considering these criteria, in order: weeks in the Top 10, weeks in the Top 40, and weeks on the entire Hot 100 Singles chart. However, the video only shows total weeks on the Hot 100, as that would have been too much information in such short time each song has.
