Up From the Depths! - Metal Detecting an Old Colonial Town RICH with American Revolutionary History!

Published on Tue, Jun 25th 2024 Entertainment Rectangular HD

This week we are heading back to Bordentown New Jersey to metal detect an old home that sits at the southern entrance of this historic city. Joining the group are the current property owners along with some members of the local historical society in hopes to find lost pieces of everyday life from throughout its storied history!

Bordentown boasts a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1682 by English Quaker Thomas Farnsworth. Initially known as Farnsworth’s Landing, the town emerged as a significant river port along the Delaware River. By the mid-18th century, it had grown into a bustling hub for trade and transportation, benefiting from its strategic location between Philadelphia and New York City. During the American Revolution this town was set ablaze by British soldiers on more than one occasion but the several of the stone buildings survived, even through to modern day. Many notable Patriots called Bordentown home, like Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Thomas Paine, an influential political philosopher. Also several artisons like Patience Wright and then her son Joseph Wright who design some of America's earliest coins. In 1837, the Bordentown Female College was established, one of the earliest institutions for higher education for women in the United States. The city also has the first free public school in the state, started by American Red Cross founder Clara Barton. So much history for only a small one square mile area, but hopefully through our detecting we can help add to their story!
