Comet Goldfish Tank Care & Growth - Common?

Published on Mon, Jun 10th 2019 Pets & Animals Rectangular HD

The common goldfish and comet goldfish are pretty similar aquarium fish. I talk about the small differences and how the fish’s tails are different. They get around a foot long at full size and it takes around 2 years to get there.

Can anyone point me to a resource that explains goldfish genetics. Recessive traits, out cross and such? Would be much appreciated. Any good high school or college 101 basic biology book explains what you want to know. It's not easy, though.

Yeah they mustve not been science kids. Not everyone with the same diploma is gonna have the same knowledge. I took all the science classes in highschool and I can tell you alot about genetics, but again not everyone took all the science courses. He is saying that those who did take the science courses would know, not everyone with a Diploma.

I know but it was basic genetics they taught us..in hmm.. I think around 7th grade (?). In my school at least. To me it's basic knowledge that a black or brown gene would trump over a light color carrying gene. It can still be carried to the next generation..but wouldn't be outwardly displayed in an individual with Bb. I'm referring to dogs with this, black and fawn pugs. but I don't know exactly how goldfish genetics work. That's the fun of all this tho.. learning more and more.

What was said above, genetics isn't species dependent, learn the general rules and you learn it for goldfish. i worked at NERD in nh as a rodent breeder for kevin mccurley...his interest in ball python morphs got me into genetics. having free reign to his rat room enabled me to play with phenotypes. i've always loved goldfish, but after working there i am able to see and genuinely appreciate the work that goes into it.

Thank you for those who have commented. If you aren’t able to help with the question, please do not comment. Advising someone to look it up defeats the purpose of having a place to ask questions and share information. Learning basic genetics in high school about alleles and Punnett squares isn’t going to explain how to breed fish to get the traits you may be looking for. I’m sure the OP is more concerned about how to get the phenotypes with the different variations of fish. That kind of information is only going to be found with experienced breeders. No text book from high school is going to cover that.

hi im at my wits end now with this green water problem, changed a third of the tanks water and its still like pea soup. im going to a big pet shop tommorow could anyone recomend what plants to get to help. plus im going to have to buy a uv, the tanks 200ltrs i would like one easy to set up thats as cheap but good but im in the uk. thanks.

OMG What happened to my post. let me try again. The cause of your issue is probably reflected in the picture- that window. Your tank is getting a lot of natural light! The best bang for buck i've found is the sunsun canister filter with UV, though the uv light does degrade the baskets so you would need new baskets after a few years. But what David said is spot on (of course, he's awesome at this!)- the greenwater is fantastic for the fish- lots of plant life to eat the nitrates, create oxygen, and it's built in food! One option is to move the tank to a less bright room, or add curtains to keep the natural light down.

It is possible your plants are outcompeting the algae for nutrients, preventing the pea soup from happening. as your undergravel filter pulls nutrients into the gravel, it feeds the plants. are your plants in that tank thriving more than the ones in the other tanks? (or it could be the undergravel filter? I have no idea. just my theory).

Whens the last time you changed your carbon filter? Not just cleaned but actually changed? Also when you do water changes are you cleaning the gravel with a gravel vacuum? Water changes are great and all it you remove the things creating the toxins. Hope it helps.
