How You’re Drawing a Katana Incorrectly

Published on Tue, Jun 18th 2024 Entertainment Rectangular HD

A common mistake when drawing your katana is this: However, what you should do is this: Extend your left arm in front of you, and draw by pulling the Saya (sheath) back. There are mainly three reasons why this is benefitial. You are maintaining distance from the opponent. Your draw will be faster by pulling your Saya back. You can hide your blade until the very last moment you draw. Let’s go deeper into the third reason. During the Edo period (1603~1868), regardless of who killed whom, the one who showed 3 Sun of his blade first was considered guilty of a duel among samurai. This means you don’t want to show your blade until the very last moment you draw. By bringing the katana out in front of you, you can draw faster and hide the blade as long as possible. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.
