Apollo Comms Part 30: Double PLL Trouble!

Published on Sat, May 11th 2024 Science & Technology Rectangular HD

We build a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) FM demodulator for extracting the Apollo downvoice from its subcarrier, using the classic 7046B IC. But in the meantime, as luck would have it, NASA's own S-band receiver's PLL seems to have gone bonkers, and we can't lock to the spacecraft microwave downlink anymore! So we'll get very hands on with PLLs in this episode. Expect a healthy dose of PLL elevator music.

Description
Videos documenting restorations of exceptional vintage electronics and early computers, space hardware and the odd mechanical calculator or Teletype. It often showcases my Hewlett-Packard test equipment collection and, from time to time, my R2-D2 robot build. Things rarely work when I start, but almost always do when I end. A nerdy place for your inner engineer, to celebrate engineering exploits of our predecessors, and learn a lot from it. To contact me, use the CAPTCHA protected email link below.
