Is The Horton Mine Haunted?

Ajouté le mer. 25 oct. 2017 Voyages et évenements Rectangular HD

The Horton Mine is one of the more famous (or infamous?) abandoned mines out there. Yet, despite its fame, most people appear to be too scared to go to the end of it or even into the mine at all! Well, I’ll tell you right now that I went all of the way to the end and looked around thoroughly (You can look forward to seeing that in this video without any hype or gimmicks). The fear of this mine originates from two videos published on Mr. Frank Hood’s channel that contained strange elements such as swinging chains, bizarre electronic voices, cold blasts of air and more. Creepy stuff, no? This was too good for me to pass up and so when driving through the area I decided to see for myself what the deal was. I’m somewhat skeptical about the supernatural and so in order to maximize the creepiness and to place myself in the right state of mind I decided to explore the mine in the dark and by myself...

There are no editing tricks in this video. I’m just going to show you what it is really like inside. Some have suggested that there are radios or other communications systems inside this abandoned mine. Others have suggested that there is an alarm system inside of the mine. There are none of these things present. Some have suggested that there are ropes or fishing line attached to the chains to make them swing. There is nothing like that either. Really, nothing is out of the ordinary. So, is the Horton Mine haunted or not? You decide and let me know what you think... Ghosts or no ghosts, I will say that this mine would be a good site for a horror film.

The Horton Mine served as a haulage adit for workings higher up the mountain. There is a warehouse/office building near the upper adit, but it is in rough shape and the upper workings are mostly caved. So, there isn’t much left to see up there. Ore was dropped down to the Horton Mine haulage adit as you’ll see in the video and then brought out via a system of conveyor belts. This was much more efficient than sending a series of trucks endlessly up and down the steep mountain road. Although I didn’t expect to need them in Nevada, it is a good thing that I brought the waders because the Horton Mine was a lot more wet inside than I expected!

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.

These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.

So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Description
Time is hard on ghost towns and abandoned mines, meaning that this part of our history is disappearing quickly. As such, we try to document them before they are gone forever. Of course, we also love just being outdoors in high mountain peaks or open deserts, following in the footsteps of old-time prospectors and miners by tracking down ghost towns or abandoned mines that no one has been to for ages. It is exciting to plunge into the darkness underground with one’s friends to explore an abandoned mine, not knowing what treasures or dangers will be encountered inside.

I hope you’ll join us on these adventures...
